چکیده

We determine the mixing time (up to a constant factor) of the Markov chain whose state space consists of n “dots” on the unit interval, wherein a dot is selected uniformly at random and moved to a uniformly random point between its two neighbors. The method involves a two-step coupling for the upper bound, and an unusual probabilistic secondmoment argument for the lower.

Density of the Periodic Points in the Interval Set

The dynamical system (f,R) is introduced and some of its properties are investigated. It is proven that there is an invariant set Λ on which the periodic points of f are dense.

Interval Exchange Transformations and Some Special Flows Are Not Mixing

An interval exchange transformation (I.E.T.) is a map of an interval into itself which is one-to-one and continuous except for a finite set of points and preserves Lebesgue measure. We prove that any I.E.T. is not mixing with respect to any Borel invariant measure. The same is true for any special flow constructed by any I.E.T. and any "roof" function of bounded variation. As an application of ...

A Novel Indicator to Predict the Onset of Instability of a Gravitational Flow on a Slope

In order to present a quantitative indicator for the onset of instability, in this paper, the critical points of a stratified gravitational flow on a slope are found and analyzed. These points are obtained by means of the solution of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations via the standard Arakawa-C finite-difference method. Results show that in the marginal Richardson numbers, the critical...

A smooth mixing flow on a surface with non-degenerate fixed points

We show that there exists a smooth mixing flow on a surface where all of the singularities are non-degenerate by constructing an example in genus 5. This answers a question of Katok-Sinai-Stepin. Ulcigrai showed that any such example is atypical (Scheglov earlier showed it would atypical in genus 2). This is connected to building a suspension flow over an IET whose roof function has symmetric l...

Ranking DMUs by ideal points in the presence of fuzzy and ordinal data

Envelopment Analysis (DEA) is a very eective method to evaluate the relative eciency of decision-making units (DMUs). DEA models divided all DMUs in two categories: ecient and inecientDMUs, and don't able to discriminant between ecient DMUs. On the other hand, the observedvalues of the input and output data in real-life problems are sometimes imprecise or vague, suchas interval data, ordinal da...
